Can I use the ROM Emulator without a carrier board?

No—this is a module intended to be integrated into host hardware.

Why do I see file size rounding?

The ROMEMUL volume is FAT12 with 4 KB clusters, so every file takes whole 4 KB clusters and some systems show its size rounded up. The module stores and serves the image at its real size.

Can I hot-switch images?

Not while the target runs. With the SidecarTridge TOS and Kickstart firmware, a new image is chosen with the SWITCHER on the target, with the rescue switcher, or in DEFAULT.TXT on the ROMEMUL volume. The module then restarts itself to serve the new image, and the target computer must restart to boot it. No power cycle and no chip swap are needed.

Why does the volume not appear when the module has USB power?

The module opens its volume only when a computer talks to it on the USB‑C cable during its first 2 seconds after power-on. Power alone starts the emulation. See Firmware & Files.

How many images can it store, and how long can their names be?

Up to 64 images, sorted by name, with names of up to 63 characters.
