Supported ROM sizes / widths

With the SidecarTridge TOS and Kickstart firmware, v4.0.0:

  • Data width: 16 bits, as the Atari ST and Amiga ROMs use.
  • Image size: up to 512 KB per image on this module, in 4 KB steps. A larger image is refused: the module serves the rescue image instead.
  • Images stored: up to 64, within the 16 MB flash, which the firmware and the settings share. A new TOS board has about 15 MB free for images, a new Kickstart board about 13 MB.

TODO: other widths (8-bit), sizes from 4 KB, and the ROM families and pinouts other firmwares support.

Known-good targets / carrier boards

  • SidecarTridge TOS: Atari ST, STF, STFM, Mega ST, STE and Mega STE, with 2- or 6-ROM carrier boards. See its Compatibility page for the motherboards.
  • SidecarTridge Kickstart: Amiga 500 and Amiga 2000. See its Compatibility page.

Known issues

  • Bus noise and timing: READ_BUS_TICKS in CONFIG.TXT sets how long the module waits before it reads an address; try 2 to 8 on a computer that crashes with a ROM that works elsewhere (TOS, Kickstart).
  • Accelerators: ACCELERATED_BUS = 1 makes the module always run at its highest speed, for accelerated computers. Accelerated machines are not supported; use it at your own risk.
  • Version matching: firmware v4.0.0 works only with the SWITCHER 4.0.0 and the rescue switcher 4.0.0.
  • Checking a target: the rescue switcher’s self-test checks every address and data line of the connection to an Atari ST or an Amiga, and its soak test runs 30 seconds of reads.
